    Interesting Facts about Hilton Head

Hilton Head Island, often referred to as simply Hilton Head as well, is a beautiful little city situated in the Atlantic Ocean, in the Lowcountry region of South Carolina. The town is actually a resort town whose popularity has been exponentially growing, attracting more than two million visitors every year. This doesn’t come as a surprise because Hilton Head is a charming and a rather unique town that has a lot to offer.

Let’s take a look at some of the most interesting facts about Hilton Head Island presented by South Shore Roofing, the best roofing contractors in Hilton Head SC.

    A Town or an Island?

Actually, it is both! This little resort town is, in reality, an island, which makes it very attractive and unique, especially to tourists. It is a barrier island, the largest one on the Southeastern coast, with 12 miles of amazing sandy beaches on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean.

    The Shape of the Island

You can often hear locals referring to the toe or the ankle of the island and wonder what they could be referring to. They are actually referring to certain locations of the island – as Hilton Head Island is shaped like a foot, and it is very small, the locals will refer to the toe, ankle or heel when describing its locations.

    Eco-Friendly Town

The island is very oriented towns the environment and its preservation, so when it comes to the development of the town, it works towards reducing its impact on nature. With their Land Management Ordinance, they also manage the styles of the buildings so that they can be naturally incorporated into the environment and the existing trees.

    No Flashing Neon Signs

Similarly to the previous eco-friendly aspect and in the efforts to further maintain the natural aspect of the entire island and remain in harmony with nature, there are no neon signs anywhere, not a single one. All of the signs on the island are in neutral and natural colors, without flashing or blinking neon.

    More Tourists than Locals

Hilton Head Island has less than 40,000 year-round residents – according to the 2010 census the number is 37,099, but when it comes to tourists, the number is well over that. There are more than 2 million visitors that come to the island every year. This number only reflects the popularity of Hilton Head across the U.S. and wider, as well as the great importance and role that tourism has in the island’s local economy.

    The Famous Harbour Town Lighthouse

The Harbour Town Lighthouse is one of the top attractions on the island and one of the favorite spots for both the locals and the tourists. However, even though it is built as a lighthouse, it was never actually a functioning lighthouse – it was built with the purposes of tourism, i.e. primarily as a tourist attraction and a gift shop. Despite that, it has become an iconic and the most recognizable symbol of Hilton Head Island.

This red and white striped lighthouse is privately owned and is even available for weddings. It has a museum with a display of photos, it is 90 feet high, and allows you a great view of the entire island.

Former Tennis Capital of the World

Hilton Head Island used to be known as the tennis capital of the world and is still today a great tennis town with more tennis courts per capita than anywhere else. It has as much as 300 tennis courts and a very famous international training facility for professional tennis, called the Van Der Meer Tennis Center. Tennis is a very famous and beloved sport in Hilton Head Island, with numerous amateur USTA leagues as well as many tennis tournaments held locally.

No Public Transportation but Two Airports

Hilton Head Island is a relatively small town, mostly focused on tourism and the needs of tourists, and therefore does not have, or need for that matter, any kind of public transportation system. The easiest and most popular way to get around the island is by bike, as there are nearly 60 miles of bicycle trails there. Another way to get around is by car, of course, and there are car rentals available for tourists, but with a limited number of vehicles, so it is always better to reserve it in advance.

For such a small place, that doesn’t even have public transportation, it may come as a surprise that Hilton Head has two airports that service the island. They are Hilton Head Airport and the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport.

    Gated Communities

Hilton Head Island is famous for its gated communities and as much as 70% of the local population lives in those kinds of communities. Even the majority of tourist areas is located within these gated communities. There are, however, several public beaches that are not a part of them.

(Unusually) High Number of Cultural Activities

For a community of this size, we can say that Hilton Head has a disproportional number of cultural institutions and opportunities within its community, which, of course, is never a bad thing. The town has a great and flourishing cultural community with an array of different activities and a very rich offer.

You can enjoy performances or exhibitions in one of the numerous institutions such as the Hilton Head Dance School, the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina, Main Street Theatre, Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra, the Coastal Discovery Museum, and many others.
