Center for Wildlife Education
The Center for Wildlife Education is an education center located at Georgia Southern University.
The Center has been open to visitors since 2018 and features different animal habitats. Visitors get familiar with all kinds of raptors (eagles, owls, hawks, falcons, kestrels, vultures, etc.) and reptiles on more than five acres of animal habitats. Also, the Center includes a lecture theater and an indoor classroom so visitors can learn more about animals from interesting lectures and speeches.
The Center for Wildlife Education also includes a 12-acre wetland preserve with a pond that contains a beaver lodge and a waterfowl habitat.
Besides the Children’s Discovery Trail, the Center contains many other educational trails to stroll along self-guided nature walks; or you can schedule a guided tour and learn more about the Center.
The Center is open for visitors every workday and Saturday from 9 AM to 4:45 PM, except on Saturdays when the Center closes its doors at 5 PM.
Botanic Garden
Botanic Garden is also located at Georgia Southern University. It features many unique and endangered plants and various events and gardening workshops. The garden consists of several parts: Heritage Garden, Rose Arbor, Children Vegetable Garden, Camellia Garden, Native Plant Landscape Garden, Native Azalea Collection, and Bog Garden.
Visitors can also take a walk through many woodland trails and enjoy in peace and harmony of this unique place.
Furthermore, the park administration allows the Botanic Garden to be rented for weddings, receptions, rehearsal dinners, or other events. So it isn’t unusual to see cheerful company and brides and grooms having a great time in the gardens.
Mill Creek Regional Park
Mill Creek Regional Park is a public park located at 1388 GA-24. It is a parkland with children’s playgrounds, exercise stations, tennis courts, and baseball and soccer fields. It is also a place with two walking/running trails, Mill Creek Park Outer Loop and Mill Creek Park Pond Loop.
While Pond Loop is a relatively short trail, more for a leisure walk, Mill Creek Park Outer Loop is a two kilometers long trail, ideal for biking, running, or walking. It is also a dog-friendly trail, but our four-legged pets must be on a leash.
Willie McTell Trail
One more walking, cycling, or running trail, almost two kilometers long, located near Statesboro and along the deserted railroad. Since it isn’t so well-known as trails in Mill Creek Regional Park, there aren’t many visitors, so if you are more of a solitude walker who likes to spend time on his own, this trail is perfect for you.
